If you're planning to have a tree removed, don't forget about getting rid of the stump too. Stump removal is often an additional step that isn't necessarily included in basic tree removal. You may have old stumps in your yard now that were left by the previous owner of your home. Leaving stumps used to be common since big stumps are so hard to pull out of the earth. Fortunately, you can have stumps ground away, and that's an easy and quick way to eliminate a stump problem. Here's why you should remove a stump and why grinding is a good way to do it.

Removing a Stump Beautifies Your Property

A tree stump can be an eyesore in your front yard, and it may affect the value and desirability of your home when you're ready to sell your house. It takes years for a tree stump to deteriorate and disappear. During those years, you may have ongoing problems with new shoots coming up as the tree tries to come back to life. Once the tree starts rotting, it may attract insects like termites that are dangerous to have near your home. Plus, a stump in your yard is inconvenient since you have to mow around it and it takes up valuable yard space.

Grinding Chews Up The Stump For Easy Disposal

If a tree stump is small enough, you may be able to pull it out of the ground with a truck and chain. However, you're left with a huge chunk of tree that's difficult to handle and dispose of. One of the advantages of stump grinding is the stump is chewed up on the spot so there is no heavy chunk of tree to contend with. Ideally, you'll have stump removal at the same time as you have the tree removed, but if you don't, you can always have the stump removed later. Grinding away the stump eliminates the stump several inches below the ground so you'll be able to plant grass and reclaim your yard in the space. As a side benefit, you'll get to keep the mulch if you want it.

The mulch may be used to fill in the hole left from grinding, or you may want to save it for use on your plant beds. If you don't have use for mulch, you can bag it and throw it out or let the tree service take it away. Grinding eliminates the stump by using a fairly small machine that doesn't tear up your yard like using a truck and chain would. It's the ideal way to eliminate a new or old stump so your yard is well-kept and you don't have a huge rotting stump attracting attention in your yard.
